چکیده

The classical model of decision making under uncertainty assumes that decision makers care only about final outcomes. The decision mak ers’ beliefs enter the model only as a means of weighting the possible material outcomes, yet they do not generate an intrinsic value by themselves. Put differently, they are not part of the domain over which preferences are defined. Consequently, psychological effects of beliefs such as anxiety, suspense, and curiosity are left out of the classical model. A growing trend in the literature argues that the inclusion of beliefs in the domain of preferences accommodates an even richer set of behaviors and allows us to address questions that are left unanswered by the classical model. One particular question that has received much attention is: why do people sometimes avoid information, which is instrumental in mak ing their decisions? For example, why do people who may be at risk of exposure to HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, avoid being tested when such tests are available at no cost (Andrew Caplin and Eliaz 2003)? Such information avoidance is explained by positing that people derive an intrinsic disutility from anticipating a bad out come. Hence, when deciding whether to obtain information, individuals not only consider the “material benefit” they could gain from updating their beliefs, but they also consider the implied “lottery” on their posterior beliefs. This explanation implies the converse, that decision makers may also seek noninstrumen tal information, i.e., information that will not change their ultimate decision but will allow

Preferences for Non-Instrumental Information and Skewness∗

We present experimental results from a broad investigation of intrinsic preferences for information. We examine whether people prefer negatively skewed or positively skewed information structures when they are equally informative, whether people prefer Blackwell more informative information structures, and how individual preferences over the skewness and the degree of information relate to one ...

Modelling and Experimental Testing of Asymmetric Information Problems in Lease and Hire Contracts (Based on Contract Theory)

This article aims to study lease and hiring contract in the Iranian-Islamic setting and analyze the asymmetric information problem in these contracts. For doing this, we study the characteristics of lease and hiring contracts in Iran (real world experimental characteristics that recognized in other studies), using library method, then we mathematically model different aspects of asymmetric info...

A social recommender system based on matrix factorization considering dynamics of user preferences

With the expansion of social networks, the use of recommender systems in these networks has attracted considerable attention. Recommender systems have become an important tool for alleviating the information that overload problem of users by providing personalized recommendations to a user who might like based on past preferences or observed behavior about one or various items. In these systems...

The Effect of Dynamic Permeability on Velocity and Intrinsic Attenuation of Compressional Waves in Sand

Stress waves contain useful information about the properties of porous materials; they can be recovered through different non-destructive testing methods such as crosswell, vertical seismic profile, borehole logging as well as sonic tests. In all these methods, it is crucial to assess the effects of frequency on wave attributes including velocity and intrinsic attenuation. The dependency of per...

Voice, Control, and Procedural Justice: Instrumental and Noninstrumental Concerns in Fairness Judgments

One hundred seventy-nine undergraduate Ss took part in a study of the effects of instrumental and noninstrumental participation on distributive and procedural fairness judgments. In a goal-setting procedure, Ss were allowed voice before the goal was set, after the goal was set, or not at all. Ss received information relevant to the task, irrelevant information, or no information. Both preand po...
